Instagram announced recently that it plans to change from a chronological timeline to one that is based on an algorithm taking engagement and relationships into account. The idea is to stream highly relevant content to a users timeline. This move does not directly impact any ad revenue. It’s merely an attempt to improve the user experience.
The unintended consequence from this very vague announcement was that power users urged their followers to turn on notifications so that their updates are not overseen. Essentially, anytime this Instagram celebrity would post a picture, the followers will get pinged on their phone. It’s easy to see that even the most enthusiastic Instagram users will get turned off by this very quickly.
In a nutshell, it seems the Instagram community is perhaps a bit overreacting to the changes ahead. It’s safe to assume that celebrity updates will be still relevant in a person’s timeline with or without notifications turned on. Moreover, it is safe to assume that this topic will be dropped quickly as the Instagram users adjust to the new timeline algorithm, which by the way is expected to be phased in gradually over time.
